Plastic cannot be broken down naturaly, which means the organisms and enzymes that are responsible for breaking things down don't recognize the plastic. Instead, plastic breaks down through the UV rays from the sun, the pieces getting smaller and smaller eventally becoming microscopic, never actually decomposing.
We produce more than 400 million tons of plastic each year, much of which is only used for a few moments.
Every year more than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans. On top of the 150 million tons that is already there.

Out of all the plastic in the world, only 9% of it is recycled. Leaving 91% out of the recycling bin.
